West Highlands - Little Boxes Made of Ticky-Tacky

Ahem! For your viewing pleasure, you might want to click on the YouTube video (three images down) as you peruse these wonderful images of just a wee example of what’s happening over in West Highlands. Preserve the character of the neighborhood, you say? Um, nope. Not happenin’…. The “character” of the neighborhood is, in a small part, provided at the end of this little audio/visual adventure. The few representative gems of the “character” of West Highlands are thumbnails, so wait till the video is over if you want to enlarge them.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. Developers will do anything to make a quick buck. Who cares about the “character of the neighborhood”? Fortunately, these ticky-tacky boxes probably won’t be standing in another 50 years.

Come on Guys…they aren’t ALL that bad. You have to admit that some of these cracker boxes need to go. I live in the Highlands neighborhood too. The McMansions are a bit much, and I don’t like the row house look either. Anything more than a duplex really looks out of place Maybe the answer is to keep the looks a little more modest and more in the character of the older neighborhood while still being able to update the properties.

You’ve nailed it on the head once again, George! The music adds greatly to the experience. Dave’s comment touched on their only redeeming characteristic: built of stucco or brick veneer over OSB with vinyl windows, they will be ripe for replacement in 5-7 years. Such construction is targeted toward the most inexperienced and naive homebuyers who can be shucked into believing that replacement of 75 to 100 year old homes with this crap is “green.”
